Heat can get expensive. Especially when it starts getting really cold outside. The heat has to constantly be on. Fortunately, there are ways to save money on your heating bill. I am here to tell you about all of these little secrets that I use, and hopefully you will find them useful.

First of all, if you live alone or with one other person, heating your home is simple. Get a portable space heater. If you spend most of your time in one room then put it in that room. These space heaters, work so quick and you will be warm in no time. You can keep the heat in your house very low, and just heat certain areas. This is great especially at night when you are in only your bedroom. Place the space heater in your room and set it to your preferred temperature. You will stay warm and cozy all night and be saving money because you won't be heating the rest of your house.

Also, close the vents of the rooms that you are not in. This will bring the heat to areas of the house that you are in. Close the doors of the rooms that you don't often use. This will circulate heat to only the areas of the house that you use.

Next, turn your thermostat down! Keeping the thermostat at a lower temperature then you are used to will help save you a lot of money on your heating bill. Especially turn it down when you aren't home. There is no reason to heat your home if nobody is home. Turn the thermostat way down when you leave, and back up when you get home. Also, turning it down at night when you are sleeping is a good idea as well. Just use another blanket if it is necessary.

Cover all your leaks! This is very important to do in the winter if you want to save money. Leaks usually come from your windows and doors. Find out where you are getting leaks in your home and use caulk to cover the leak. Winterize your windows.

Turn down your water heater. This will help you cut costs and you won't even notice a difference. The only difference is that you will be saving money on your monthly bill.Turn it down to about 115 degrees and nobody will even know.

Wear more clothes! Wearing shorts and a t-shirt isn't very smart if you are trying to save money on heating costs. Wear warm clothing around your house and you are much less likely to get cold. Put on a robe, thick socks, and slippers. Put more layers on and you can easily turn the thermostat down. Also, when you are sitting or laying down, cover yourself in a blanket.

After using the oven, keep the oven door open. There is no use wasting that heat that you are already paying for. So, when you make dinner, leave the oven door open and let the hot air come out to warm up your home.
